Turkish food in Birmingham: where to eat, by neighbourhood

Birmingham has more Turkish restaurants than any council outside London, and they cluster in a few corridors far from the city centre. Hygiene ratings are the weakest of any big city we track, so this guide leans on the listings' scores as much as on the neighbourhoods.

This guide walks Birmingham by neighbourhood: Alum Rock and Coventry Road; Lozells, Newtown and the north; Broad Street and the centre; The gap: the south-west. Counts, hygiene shares and postcode clusters come from our directory; the map below is seeded on the city centre, and each neighbourhood links to the restaurants we list there.

Alum Rock and Coventry Road

The eastern corridors of Alum Rock Road and Coventry Road through Small Heath carry the densest run of Turkish and Kurdish grills, doner counters and bakeries in the Midlands, serving a mixed South Asian and Middle Eastern customer base. Prices are low, portions are large, and the best grills run real charcoal. Hygiene scores vary; check the listing.

Lozells, Newtown and the north

B19 and the streets around Lozells Road have a second cluster, older and more Kurdish, with lahmacun bakeries and late-night kebab houses. This is where to find hand-minced Adana in the city.

Broad Street and the centre

Broad Street's late-night trade supports a row of doner and grill counters that are busiest after midnight. The city centre proper has few sit-down Turkish restaurants of note, which is unusual for a city this size.

The gap: the south-west

Edgbaston, Harborne, Moseley and Kings Heath have Birmingham's highest incomes, strong search demand for Turkish food, and almost no Turkish restaurant. Our feasibility data rates it the clearest opening in the West Midlands, and residents currently drive to the east side or eat Turkish food at home.
